Actress Dixie Carter, best known for her work in the 1980s sitcom “Designing Women,” has died.  (Getty Images: Jason Kirk)

Dixie Carter was married to actor, Hal Holbrook for 26 years.  Carter was known for playing strong-willed Southern characters on stage and screen.  In addition to her breakout role as interior designer Julia Sugarbaker on “Designing Women,” the Tennessee native’s TV acting credits include “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Out Of The Blue“.  Most recently, Dixie appeared on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” playing Gloria Hodge, Orson Hodge’s mother.  Carter earned an Emmy nomination for that role.  Dixie Carter was 70 years old.
