Clickondetroit.com reports, A police officer is dead and another man is hospitalized after a shooting in Taylor around 6 a.m. Police said the shooting happened at Coppertree Apartments, which is located on the 12,400 block of Pine Street. Officers said a woman called 911 to say a home invasion was in progress. When officers arrived at the apartment, they said they noticed a man attempting to jump through a window, Cmdr. Daniel Crowell said. Police said Cpl. Matthew Edwards, 31, confronted the suspect and the suspect shot him numerous times. Edwards partner returned fire and struck the suspect, Crowell said. Both Edwards and the suspect were taken to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn where Edwards was pronounced dead.  The suspect is a 36-year-old Westland man. His identity has not been released. He is undergoing surgery and is expected to survive.

“Officer Edwards made the ultimate sacrifice. Something we all take for granted as we put on our uniforms everyday. As law enforcement officers, we all expect to go home at night to our families. Please pray for Officer Edwards family in the coming days and weeks and please pray for the Taylor police department,” said Crowell. Police said Edwards has been with the department since 2005 and was named Officer of the Year in 2008. Edwards leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Residents said they heard the gunshots. “I heard nine or 10 gunshots. When I got up and looked out, I saw the police officer laying on the ground near the police car,” said Nicole Green. “It’s just a sad situation.”

  1. Laura Sapp says:

I am again sickened by a police officer being shot in the line of duty, and now his wife is a widow and the kids have no Daddy, it really sickens me when our officers are shot down doing what they are suppose to do Protect,And, Serve, I work with a lot of police officers as I am a Crossing Guard at a high School and I tell you what I live in SCS,Michigan and anytime I have needed a police officer they have been there always even when my daughter was having seizures the police officers and paramedics got to our home really quick and, during a time a lady rear ended my car as she was not stopping for the sirens on the firetrucks and she was to busy talking on her cell phone the police officers were there again, I give support to every police officer that is a man or woman in uniform and I feel the same way about our EMS,Paramedics,Firemen or firewoman and this was a senseless murder that I had wished had not happened that day. My heart and thoughts and Prayers are with all the family members and the Taylor Police Officers at this time. God Bless to you all! Laura Sylvester/Sapp
