In honor of Country Music Month, throughout October, we’re going to be running Top 5 lists of different types of country songs. Today, we present to you, the Top 5 Country Cover Songs.

It is a known fact that Country Music often crosses the boundaries into Southern Rock and Pop Rock. When our favorite country artists pick up a familiar classic or top Billboard song to cover – whether it becomes a new single, or you are just fortunate enough to hear it in concert, it becomes that tune you just can’t get out of your head!  Take a look at the Top 5 Cover songs we love, from top country music artists!

5.  “Life Is A Highway” by Rascal Flatts

[lastfm]Tom Cochrane[/lastfm]’s biggest solo hit after leaving [lastfm]Red Rider[/lastfm], turns out to be a smash hit for [lastfm]Rascal Flatts[/lastfm] and the Disney Pixar movie Cars!

4.  “Piece of My Heart” by Faith Hill

It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a song from [lastfm]Janis Joplin[/lastfm] would sound as if it should have been a country tune all along.  After all, she made a [lastfm]Kris Kristofferson[/lastfm] song one of her biggest hits and you don’t get much more country than that.

3.  “My Maria” by Brooks and Dunn

As a rule, [lastfm]Brooks and Dunn[/lastfm] didn’t do covers … and they argued about doing this one. But Kix insisted that Ronnie‘s voice would handle the old [lastfm]B. W. Stevenson[/lastfm] hit perfectly.. .and it did.

2.  “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” by Mark Chesnutt

If you want to get a good argument going, just ask someone which version is better, Mark’s or [lastfm]Aerosmith[/lastfm]’s. Since both versions came out comparatively close to each other, you’ll find fans of Mark’s who’ll swear Aerosmith ripped him off.

1.  “Tiny Dancer” by Tim McGraw

“Tiny Dancer” is a 1971 song by [lastfm]Elton John[/lastfm] with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It appears on John’s fifth album, Madman Across the Water. This video is a live performance from The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan on April 24, 2010!

And our consolation (if we could have posted Top 6) would go to:

“Stairway To Heaven” by Dolly Parton

We have voted and agree that due to the length of the songs, “Stairway To Heaven” and “Dashboard Lights” should both be removed from all Karaoke books! Especially if the karoake singer is “vocally challenged.” Thank goodness, Dolly is not!
