Here’s some great news for new Mom’s like my niece Jessee Tomford (pictured above with my adorable great-nephew Gage!) who may believe the experience shrinks your brains. Lack of sleep and overwhelming new responsibilities can seem to leave you forgetful and scatter-brained. But a new study suggests that new mothers’ brains may actually grow in the postpartum period, leaving you smarter than we were before pregnancy!
The study indicates that mothering is not so much an instinctive response as a process requiring brain building. And mothers like my niece Jessee, who have the warmest and most positive interactions with their babies also exhibited the greatest brain growth in the areas of emotional processing, sensory integration, reasoning and judgment!
What about new Dads? No word on whether or not it makes husbands any smarter…but I’m guessing, no! Hehehe….just sayin’!
