[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Madonna[/lastfm] says she can relate to bullying, having gone through it herself growing up in Michigan. Madonna appeared via satellite on yesterday’s Ellen to discuss the problem of bullying in America. “I’m incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying,” she says. “Suicide in general is disturbing. Teenagers committing suicide is extremely disturbing, but to hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories, what have you, is kind of unfathomable.” Madonna says she can relate to those who’ve been bullied, having experienced it herself as a kid growing up in Michigan. She explained that things changed for her when a gay ballet teacher introduced her to a community of artists and she realized “it was OK to be different.” Madonna, who admits she, “wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for the gay community,” compares the bullying of gay teens to other historical atrocities. “Said Madonna, “It’s like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews. Sorry if I’m going on a rampage right now, but this is America. The land of the free and the home of the brave….”

I went to school with her and I have no recollection of her EVER being bullied. She was always considered artistic and cool. I think she’s conveniently “remembering” things…..

  2. Did she go to school in Rochester or Rochester Hills?

    1. Bossyred says:

yes – Rochester Adams and was in the ‘artistic’
part of school – singing and acting

@yeah right – the thing about bullying – it’s defined by the receiver (much like sexual harrassment is) – not the doer or witnesses. If someone feels bullied, even if you wouldn’t under the same circumstances, then they ARE being bullied. Someone on the cheer team, dating a really cute guy, who looks like she is having the most fun a student can have in school, can feel bullied and harrassed and sad and lonely by treatment she receives from others – it’s the feeling not the perception of others.
