High School wrestling is a pretty big deal in many states including Iowa.  History has been made in Iowa because it is the first time in the two decades girls have been able to compete in boys wrestling, that a girl, in this case two, have qualified for the Iowa State Wrestling Meet.  One girl won her first match…due to forfeit.

Cassy Herkelman and Megan Black are the first two girls to ever qualify to wrestling at the State Meet in Iowa.  Cassy actually won her first match because he opponent, Joel Northrup, decided it was unfit that he would wrestle a girl:

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan [Black] and their accomplishments,” Northrup said in a statement given to the media following his official forfeit. “However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times.

“As a matter of conscience and faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa.”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Do you think the boy did this out of spite, or is the news making a bigger deal out of this than they should?
