A Tampa, Florida mother is defending her decision to stick her teenage son on a street corner with a sign that says, “GPA 1.22 … honk if I need education.”

Ronda Holder says she has tried everything to get her 15-year-old to shape up academically. She’s offered help, asked to see homework, grounded, lectured him and confiscated his cell phone but his indifference at a school meeting last week was the final straw. The next day, Holder made the sign and made her son wear it for nearly four hours.

Experts criticized the move as humiliating and ineffective, and someone reported Holder to the Department of Children and Families.

What do you think of this punishment?

that,s a great punishment. Now a shirt needs to be made for him so he can wear it to school.

  2. Susan Banks says:

I believe this punishment was a good idea. If grounding him and taking away his possessions didn’t work then maybe a little public humiliation would do the trick. I know if my friends seen me on a street corner holding that sign, I would be embarrassed and change my ways. Kids these days have no discipline. Thats why so many of them end up in jail. So, public humiliation or dropping out of school and landing in jail? Heres your sign!

  3. Michael Walden says:

I think she is right. She is trying to teach her son there are consequences for his actions or in this case inaction. He is probably a bright kid with no drive or sense of what his future holds without an education. More parents need to get directly involved in their kids’ education. She should be applauded not punished.

In my opinion Ronda Holder has left it far too late to set down disciplinary standards for her son. This should have been done from the cradle, and now she is ‘reaping the whirlwind’!
I agree with other commentators that a lack of discipline is the root cause of today’s youth problems, but what to do?
It is clear from this and other similar cases, that the mother is desperate to get her son on the right path, but by this action she will, in my opinion, achieve nothing other than increase the gap between them and nuture further resentment from the boy.
A possible solution may be for her to arrange a meeting between herself, her son, and head of school where his future can be discussed. Someone in authority needs to lay it on the line for the boy, and ask him to choose between the sad life of an uneducated bum or happiness with a good job and prospects. Sometimes, we need to paint a vivid picture of possible future scenarios in order to wake the initiative, which here seems dormant. Take him on a tour of the poorer districts of the town, show him the bums living on the street, and ask him if that’s what he wants to do with his life?
As a backup, it might be useful for him to spend his free hours in nightschool catching up on what he has missed.
