I am not ashamed to admit, “I was country, when country wasn’t cool!” I grew up on old, classic country with my parents cranking up our old ‘living room stereo console’ playing their favorite albums back in their day and time! I thought it would be cool now, to revisit some of the great, classic country artists and pay homage to them with old music video’s for you to enjoy as well! Featured today is: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tammy Wynette[/lastfm] and her classic “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” and a little story about why this song is so special to me too!
My parents divorced when I was 10 years old. Both my parents remarried within a year, and my Mom was struggling with 3 new babies, all under 2 years old (yes, twins!) and money was tight. So she joined ‘Columbia Record Club‘ where she received a free record player, as long as she also purchased one record per month. Her first selection was a 3 album set, George Jones and Tammy Wynette: The King & Queen of Country compilation, and since my parents were recently divorced, this song hit me especially hard…and I played it over, and over and over again! That is why I still to this day, know every single word…even well enough to sing to Blake Shelton at his bachelor party in Vegas last week.
SIDEBAR: I should never have sung this ‘while wearing my wedding dress’ at my 2nd wedding, bad omen for sure, as I was divorced just one year later!
Here is the REAL queen, whom I was also blessed to meet many years ago at the WYCD Downtown Hoedown, when she appeared the same day as George Jones, another day I will never forget! Tammy Wynette: “D-I-V-O-R-C-E”
