To the casual American, Cinco De Mayo may mean a reason to leave work early and drink tequila, but there is some real significance to the date in Mexico.

The day commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

After that history lesson, now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Here is our list of the Top 10 Country Songs for your Cinco De Mayo Party!

#10: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alan Jackson[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jimmy Buffett[/lastfm] – “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere”

When you think tropical locale and party time, how do you not think of Jimmy Buffett? Plus, bring Alan Jackson along for the ride and you are sure to have a good time, which is the theme of this song: getting done with work and getting your party on.

#9: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blake Shelton[/lastfm] – “Playboys of the Southwestern World”

The lyrics say everything about this single off of Blake Shelton’s ablum, The Dreamer:

Hey Romeo
Let’s go down to Mexico
Chase senoritas
Drink ourselves silly
Show them Mexican girls
A couple of real hillbillies

#8: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jimmy Buffett[/lastfm] – “Mexico”

While in a constant state of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett concerts transform where ever in the world his is, into his own personal beach front setting. This cover of James Taylor’s tune will hopefully do the same for you. So sit back, relax, close your eyes, and picture the white sands.

#7: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Willie Nelson[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Merle Haggard[/lastfm] – “Pancho and Lefty”

The song tells the story of a Mexican bandit named Pancho and a more enigmatic character, Lefty. The song tells of Pancho’s death and implies that he was betrayed by his associate Lefty who was paid off by the Mexican federales.

#6: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]George Strait[/lastfm] – “Seashores of Old Mexico”

George Strait said it best in Merle Haggard’s original song:

I left, out of Tucson, with no destination in mind.
I was runnin’ from trouble and the jail-term the Judge had in mind.
And the border meant freedom, a new life, romance,
And that’s why I thought I should go,
And start my life over on the seashores of old Mexico.

#5: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tim McGraw[/lastfm] – “That’s Why God Made Mexico”

I think we can all agree with Tim in this song, more so in the winter. Here are some lyrics to ponder as you sit at your desk at work and dream about the beaches and the outside:

And that’s why God made Mexico
A place where we can lay low
And the Cuervo goes down nice and slow
And the warm wind blows
That’s why God made Mexico

#4: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Joe Nichols[/lastfm] – Tequila Makes Her Clothes Come Off”

Joe Nichols says it all in this song. “This girl” loves to party and the tequila makes her a little bit naughty. Sounds good to us!

#3: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tracy Byrd[/lastfm] – “Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo”

Sometimes a night on the town is like a 10 round heavyweight fight against the bottle. You win some, and you lose many. How about your next bout against Jose, Cuervo that is.

#2: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kenny Chesney[/lastfm] – “Beer In Mexico”

“Sit right here, and have another beer in Mexico”.

Last time I was in Mexico, that is one of the first things that I did: I grabbed a bucket of beers, my iPod, a beach chair, and dragged it to the ocean’s edge… Closed my eyes and jammed out to Kenny Chesney.

#1: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Toby Keith[/lastfm] – “Stays In Mexico”

You may or may not be able to relate to the words of this song by Toby Keith, but I am sure it would not be hard for you to imagine. This is the ultimate party song that can also be taken as fact if you have one too many south of the border.

BONUS: [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sammy Hagar[/lastfm] – “Mas Tequila”

While not necessarily a country artist, this is the anthem for tequila drinking in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Sammy is friends with country heavy hitters such as Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith.

There you have it! Hope you enjoyed the list!
