“Let freedom ring!” CBS just announced that [lastfm]Martina McBride[/lastfm] will be filling in the for [lastfm]Lionel Ritchie[/lastfm] on the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on Monday July 4th, broadcast live on CBS. Lionel is doing okay, but suffering from strained vocal chords, so the producers tapped Martina to fill the slot.
While she wishes Lionel the best, Martina is very excited for the opportunity, saying:
“One of my most favorite things in the world is to perform with a live orchestra, and to sing with the prestigious Boston Pops on Independence Day in front of thousands of people and on national television is not only an amazing opportunity but a career highlight for me. I wish Mr. Richie a speedy recovery and am looking forward to what will be a memorable day for me.”
Of course Martina will sing some of the classics, but we have to wonder, will she get to sing one of her signature songs, like say, “Independence Day?”
We’re sure there’s no need to remind you, but Martina already does an amazing version of the “Star Spangled Banner,” which she has sung at countless high profile events in the past.
The 38th annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will be hosted by Michael Chiklis, and rumor has it, he may even sing a song or two. Tune in at 10 PM on the 4th of July on CBS!
