With a constant tour schedule and a ton of hit songs, you would think that [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rascal Flatts[/lastfm] member [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Joe Don Rooney[/lastfm] wouldn’t have a single thing to be upset about. If you bought into that theory, you would be wrong. While there isn’t much that upsets him, there are still a few things that gets on his nerves!
According to AOL’s The Boot, Joe Don is not too pleased with the first few Rascal Flatts albums. Of course they were big hits, but the group did not actually play the majority of the instruments on the record!
“When I look at it, yeah, I was pissed off. Jay [DeMarcus] and I didn’t play a lot on those albums,” he reveals to the Chicago Tribune. “At the same time, we had some amazing hit songs.”
You would think that obviously the group can play well. I mean, they play during the live shows so obviously they know their way around a set of instruments. He said that their current producer, Dann Huff, made the biggest difference of how the group sounds now.
“Dann was a big proponent of having us play and bring our personalities into the music — not only our voices, but our personalities,” the guitarist acknowledges. “[He] really opened that door and that trust window with Lyric Street to allow us to be the musicians we are. All of a sudden, you hear these songs and they’re just a little bit different. You can hear a growth and maturity.”
And while reminiscing about the first time the group sang together, it gave him chills!
‘What in the world is this?'” he reminisces. “We just locked in. We knew we had something special. I don’t know we ever thought it would take us so far.”
