Most brides obsess over every last detail of their big day and scour racks for the dream dress, but Kjerstin Gruys has taken on a pre-nuptial challenge of more unique proportions. She has sworn off looking in a mirror for an entire year — six months of which will lead up to her wedding! How long could you go without looking into a mirror?
The idea took root when she read a passage out of the book “The Birth of Venus,” where an order of nuns swears off the sight of human flesh — including even looking at their own bodies. Kjerstin says that she was feeling constant pressure to look perfect and that was intensified by wedding planning. So, she wondered if a year without mirrors could lead to greater self-acceptance and appreciation for her body.
