It’s always a risk giving a teenager a credit card, but doing so can also teach financial responsibility. Theoretically, giving your teenager a credit card can be a smart move. You can help build his or her credit scores and supervise how the card gets used while your kid is still under your roof. But it does not always work that way….depends on the teen and how responsible they are!
The problem with kids, is that they ‘think like kids’ and would probably charge right up to their credit limit without understanding what they have done. Many kids just don’t realize that the card is not money, it’s a loan. I’m not gonna lie, there is NO WAY I could have given my daughter Gina a credit card when she was a teen, she was just too irresponsible back then. But now I have a 17-year-old step-daughter Alexa, who I do think I could totally trust to be responsible, and not charge more than she could pay back, and help to build her credit.
Every kid is different, that’s for sure! What about your teenager….could you trust them with a credit card?
