Sometimes creative people remain humming in the background, choosing for whatever reason not to fully break the surface. But that doesn’t make them, or their work, any less powerful.

One of these talents was Nashville songwriter and painter Susanna Clark, who passed away Wednesday, June 27 after a long illness. She was 73.

Susanna was the wife of singer-songwriter Guy Clark, who has been one of the giants of Texas music since his knockout debut album Old No. 1 in 1975. Married since 1972, the home of Guy and Susanna became a magnet for other musicians, both newcomers and veterans, and they were even occasionally referenced in song (fellow Texas songwriting legend Townes Van Zandt, for instance, referenced “Susanna and Guy” in his song “Pueblo Waltz”). Guy’s classic “L.A. Freeway” also mentions Susanna.

Susanna was also a talented writer herself. Songs of hers include “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose,” “Easy From Now On” (cowritten with Carlene Carter), “We Were Kinda Crazy Then,” “Heavenly Houseboat Blues” (cowritten with Townes), and “Come From The Heart.”

Artists who recorded her songs include Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker, Kathy Mattea, and Miranda Lambert, who included “Easy from Now On” on her album Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Susanna Clark was also a painter, and her work grace album covers by artists including Willie Nelson (Stardust), Guy Clark (Old No. 1), Emmylou Harris (Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town), and Nanci Griffith (Dust Bowl Symphony).
