Today is August, 1st, and three years ago, I took the big leap from bachelorhood and hitched up with my best friend, Karen, who I had decided completed me like no other.   I’ve not regretted that decision once, and we have a lot of fun together, being silly, laughing, and just enjoying life to the fullest, because that’s really what life and love is all about.   People ask me what the key to a successful marriage is, and  I tell them “laughter and romance”, and romance isn’t always candlelit dinners and roses.  It’s being thoughtful, listening, sharing, and laughing.  We all get fat and old and ugly, it’s important to communicate and listen and be attentive, something I still could use a little work on myself, which is why I am thankful to have a tolerant and patient partner in Karen along the way.  She really is a saint.

Now, here’s something that I ran across which was a startling statistic, to me, anyway.   In celebration of Romance Awareness Month, which is observed during the month of August,, the romantic social network, recently surveyed more than 2,300 Americans including those who are single and in a committed relationship, to gather their thoughts about modern day romance. Zoosk’s survey findings show that while the single life may sound glamorous, couples in committed relationships experience more romance in their lives.  Specific survey findings include:

2% of people say the single most romantic gesture their significant other can do for them is . . . taking out the garbage without being asked.  THAT’S how one in 50 people defines romance.  The top choice was a hug and a kiss . . . a candlelit dinner came in second.

I suppose if you add daily chores to laughter and listening, you’re on the right track a lifetime of happiness with your loved one.
