Having a pet can be the most rewarding thing ever! Before I got my first dog Elvis, 10 years ago, I spent a long time researching dog breeds to help me pick the right breed for me and my family. Owning a pet is a huge commitment, and one you need to consider carefully. There are quite a few additional expenses you will incur once you decide on the perfect pet for you and your family. In addition to food, you will need different supplies for each different pet you have and there can be costly vet bills to consider too. So if you are considering getting a pet, make sure you are aware of what it will cost you to take care of your news best friend first! Here is a list of pets and what expenses you can expect…

A Fish – The initial cost of owning a fish will cost around $200. The annual cost of a fish is only estimated around $35 per year for food and incidentals.

If you’re looking at getting a small-sized dog you can expect to pay an initial cost of $470 and then around $580 every year.

Medium-sized dogs are going to cost an upfront fee of about $565 and will then yearly cost about $695.

If you’re more a big-dog type the start up costs which include neutering/spaying and training will cost around $560 and a yearly cost of $875 thanks to their larger food bill.

If you’re a cat person, they will run around $375 for the initial costs which include spaying/neutering and getting all the essentials. After, they will run about $670 each year.

In addition to this, there can also be unexpected costs if your pet becomes ill or is injured, and trust me….as the owner of 3 small Yorkies, we have spent a small fortune in veterinary bills for all kinds of things from injuries to teeth cleaning!

This year alone we have spent over $2000 for a procedure to correct an eye injury for Elvis, having both Elvis and Priscilla’s teeth cleaned and some bad ones pulled, and an emergency visit to vet when our puppy Miracle ‘ate something’ that made her sick! Most years we have not had additional expenses… but as usual, when it rains it pours and this year was just one of those years! This can and does happen so you need to be prepared for these unexpected things when you own a pet!

Speaking of pets. please join Edwards & Lee on Sunday October 7th for the Michigan Humane Society “Mega March For Animals!” We would love for you to join Team WYCD at Kensington Metropark and help raise money to help other animals go from ‘homeless to loved!”
