What started as a cool idea featuring some truly creative musical talents has, sadly, run out of track.

The Railroad Revival Tour, a concert tour that was set to embark by train across portions of the U.S., was to feature country legends Willie Nelson and Jamey Johnson, along with the rock group Band of Horses and John Reilly & Friends (featuring actor John C. Reilly). However, the tour has now been canceled.

“It is with extreme regret that we announce the cancellation of the 2012 Railroad Revival Tour,” reads a note on the Railroad Revival website. “The decision to do so was a difficult one, but it was determined that certain complications would not permit us to host the shows in the manner intended, and that the bands and fans deserved.”

The tour was set to take place later this month, traveling from Duluth, Ga., to Oakland, Calif. As the tour website describes it, the idea was to create a “one-of-a-kind U.S. train tour” that traveled “town to town aboard 16 vintage, 1940’s railcars, setting up open air, pop-up concert venues in parks, fields and lots around the railroad tracks where they stop.” Like we said, it was a very cool idea.

This was actually the second Railroad Revival Tour–the first took place last year and featured Mumford and Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and others. (There was even a documentary made about that tour called the Big Easy Express.)

No further explanation for the cancellation has been provided at this time. (Willie Nelson’s Facebook page also made clear that “the promoters for this specific tour cancelled not Willie Nelson & Family.”) Ticket holders are being given a full refund.

And one glimmer of hope comes via tweet from the Railroad Revival folks, who wrote, “Hope to see you next year!”
