Country music has a long history with sad songs of lost love. And with “Goodbye in Her Eyes,” the Zac Brown Band’s current single, that lineage has just gotten one notch stronger.

The song takes the male perspective in love-gone-wrong tale, where, at least for the female side of the equation, the spark simply didn’t last. “She didn’t have to say a word,” Zac sings, “It was just so plain to see/She had found what she’d been looking for/And I knew it wasn’t me.”

We’ve all been there, right? That’s where the painfulness comes in–the song so clearly depicts a sad situation that is all too familiar.

Luckily, then, the video is a thing of beauty. It’s set during rehearsals for a circus, and the two people in question are performers. It’s a compelling backdrop, one with a decidedly old-fashioned character (the circus and performers feel like they could be from a century ago, or maybe just yesterday). The narrative unfolds gently, and the whole thing is beautifully shot and staged.

Watch it and see if you don’t shed a tear or two:

The video was directed by Wayne Isham, and it features a wardrobe designed by Zac’s wife, Shelly Brown. These included the costumes for female lead Jaime Murray.

Oh, and the actors? Nearly all are actual circus performers.(See more backstage photos from the video shoot.)

“Goodbye in Her Eyes” appears on the Zac Brown Band’s recent album Uncaged, which was just nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Country Album.
