WYCD Hoedown 2018 ANNOUNCED: Dierks Is Coming! Details | LineupTickets | 2017 Recap

Before Jerrod Niemann broke out as a solo artist he was writing for some of the biggest singers in country music.

In an interview with Radio.com, Niemann explained how he came to pen tracks for Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton.

“Really every situation is unique,” he said. “In the particular case of Mr. Garth Brooks, I had just moved to Nashville and I ran into one of my friends from college. I didn’t know that he lived in Nashville either and he showed up at my house one night and said, ‘Man, you wouldn’t believe this! I just ran into Garth Brooks and he’s agreed to listen to some of our songs.'”

Niemann wrote several singles for Brooks including “Good Ride Cowboy,” “That Girl Is a Cowboy” and “Midnight Sun” and recalled when he got his first phone call from the singer.

“My mom was in Nashville for Mother’s Day and I was taking her to the airport and I got a phone call and it said ‘Caller ID blocked,'” he said. “To be honest I thought it was either a collection agency or probably an angry ex-girlfriend. When it was Garth Brooks I was very surprised and about crashed my truck. At that moment I got to know him and we began writing.”

Niemann said writing with Jamey Johnson also happened organically.

“We became really close buddies along with Lee Brice and Randy Houser,” he said. “We all started writing together and just learning from each other and learning to bounce ideas. Some of those idea from the past have come up and been recorded.”

A song he wrote about his dream girl unexpectedly wound up on Shelton’s 2010 release Hillbilly Bone.

“With Blake Shelton, me and Lee Brice we’re sitting at my house and just decided to write a song about the girl of our dreams. It’s called ‘You’ll Always Be Beautiful‘ and it’s about a girl who likes to party and is not scared to look hungover,” he said. “It’s sort of silly but we wrote it over music that’s hopefully fun to dance to and Blake Shelton recorded it. So, sometimes they just fall into other people’s hands and you accidentally say something that maybe somebody wanted to say. Or, if you know someone is looking for a particular song you can write in that direction. The best songs, they come out of nowhere and they find their home in time.”
