Kenny Chesney’s upcoming Life On A Rock album – in stores today – is compiled from songs that Chesney wrote through his travels through the Virgin Islands a few years back. As he shares, the songs came out of him very raw with pen and paper. Chesney says, “It was just me and a pen and a paper and over time. And I think that was good for me ’cause I was able to really settle on a lyric and settle in my head I already had the music written in my head for a lot of these songs I just hadn’t literally done it yet.”

Life On A Rock, features a collaboration with someone very special to the singer. The album’s track, “Happy on the Hey Now (A Song for Kristi),” features vocals by Gretchen Rhodes; a person who was very influential in Kenny’s life. Chesney first saw Rhodes perform when he began going to the Virgin Islands, long before his musical career took hold. Chesney says, “The thing about Gretchen is that she had this voice that you could hear in a room. When she’d sing, people would turn around to see who it was… and she could keep folks there all night, just listening to her songs. I know: my friends and I used to go down to this beach bar a lot and listen to her play.” Gretchen now lives in Hawaii, where she makes music and Kenny is pleased that she could be a part of this project. He shares, “I was just glad we could make this work, because she’s so much a piece of my life and that circle of friends. We may live physically so far apart, but the fact that we did, it tells you so much how much it really is just one world.”

Kenny Chesney, Eli Young Band, Eric Church, Kasey Musgraves will take over Downtown Detroit on August 17th at Ford Field.
