He’s already a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, but now Vince Gill is being honored by country radio as well. The  best-selling (and well-loved) singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and overall country music champion has just been named as the 2014 recipient of the Career Achievement Award from Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc.

Gill will receive the honor at the Country Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Nashville on Feb. 18, one day before the CRB’s annual Country Radio Seminar (Feb. 19-21). Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell will perform a tribute to Gill during the ceremony as well as present him with the award. He joins an elite group of past winners that includes such legends as George Strait, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, the Judds and Alabama.

Gill’s latest release is Bakersfield, a collaboration with steel guitarist Paul Franklin that features updated versions of classic Bakersfield songs by the Southern California city’s most famous sons, Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Watch Gill perform his take on Owens’ classic “Together Again”:

According to the CRB, the Career Achievement Award award is “presented to an individual artist or act that, through their creativity, vision, performance or leadership has made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of country music and country radio.”

“Vince Gill is unquestionably one of the greatest artists in the country genre,” said Bill Mayne, Executive Director of CRS. “His body of amazing work continues to evolve, and his performances inspire us all. He is a remarkable ambassador for Country music with his talents, grace, class, leadership, humility, humanity, style and wicked sense of humor. We are very proud to present Vince with this richly deserved honor.”

Among Gill’s finest qualities is that he continues to be such a champion for the genre, and for other musicians. He regularly lends his support to up-and-coming artists, for instance producing Ashley Monroe’s Like a Rose and appearing on albums by Brandy Clark and Charlie Worsham.

And when it comes to country music’s past, he’s just as quick–and as generous–in his support. His Bakersfield album with Franklin is a prime example, and you can hear his enthusiasm as he discusses the legacy of Merle Haggard in a recent video interview supporting the project.
