The days when a man came home from work like the old classic television show Father Knows Best and his stay-at-home wife greeted him at the door with his slippers and a newspaper are over! Not many people are able to sit back in an easy chair and relax after a hard day at work anymore as we all ‘struggle to juggle’ all the responsibilities of work, home and kids!
Penn State University asked working adults to measure their stress levels throughout the day by monitoring their levels of cortisol, a major marker of stress.
They found that for the majority of us, cortisol levels were higher at home than at work. That doesn’t necessarily suggest that we should work more, or that we aren’t happy at home. It implies that the stress of trying to get everything done at home and at work tends to come out once we are home.
Most of us are not able to afford a housekeeper or maid service, and if we do not go out there and cut the grass, nobody else will do it for us! So it is harder these days when both husband and wife work outside the home, and then have to come home and take care of business there too! And when you have kids, when you get home from work is the only time you have to spend with them too.
Do you feel more stressed at home than at work?
