We all know Ed Sheeran can croon with the best of them, but with his latest album, x (out June 23), the red-headed singer is showing he’s got a hip-hop side. On lead single, “Sing,” he teamed up with Pharrell and on the track “Don’t” he calls out a shady ex-lover over a ’90s hip-hop beat.

But last night on MTV, Sheeran showed he wasn’t afraid to try his hand at some of the more well known hip-hop tracks from DJ KhaledR. Kelly and Jay Z.

Of course, Sheeran is no stranger to covers, recently doing a spot-on take of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” but MTV couldn’t make it easy on the guy, so they asked him to cover these hip-hop songs in the style of country-western.

Yes, with a country twang and an acoustic guitar, Sheeran manages to do Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and one line from Drake’s “Trophies,” which he says is the best line but is not one that Taylor Swift embroidered on a pillow for him. Hopefully she’s working on it.

R. Kelly’s “Ignition” now sounds like something Toby Keith and his red Solo cup-wielding fans could enjoy, while Jay’s “99 Problems” is now a Bob Dylan-esque strummer that we’d like to see Willie Nelson cover in the future.

On June 13, Sheeran will play a special show at New York’s Ellis Island. The singer officially kicks off his North American arena tour Aug. 22 in Seattle.
