Joe Nichols is celebrating his second number one single, “Yeah” from his “Crickets” album while nursing a bad back.  Quietly, Nichols underwent serious low back surgery on June 30th.  Nichols confesses that his doctor told him, “I want you pretty much on your back for at least two weeks and your healing should take about three months.”

That advice fell on deaf ears. “I gotta work.  I gotta go back to work on Friday,” he told the doc. “I have babies to feed.  I can’t not just do anything for two weeks.”  The doctor replied, “I highly advise you not to do that.” So what did Joe do?  He was back on stage four days after surgery and has not missed a scheduled show since.  In spite of the doctor having to cut away some bone from one of the bottom vertebrae and remove some ligaments, he continues to perform, too. Um. OUCH!

But that doesn’t mean he’s not suffering physically – or emotionally. Joe says the toughest part of the recovery has been not being able to pick up his two-year-old daughter, Dylan.
