WYCD Hoedown 2018 ANNOUNCED: Dierks Is Coming! Details | LineupTickets | 2017 Recap

Sometimes an offhand comment can be little more than a play for laughs that is gone as quickly as it began. Other times, said comment creates a storm.

This is especially true if the person making it is a public figure on the level of Seth Rogen or Michael Moore, both of whom allegedly took swipes this past weekend at the Academy Award-nominated American Sniper. The Clint Eastwood film stars Bradley Cooper as American military sniper Chris Kyle, and it’s based on Kyle’s 2012 memoir of the same name.

“American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that’s showing in the third act of Inglorious Basterds,” Rogan tweeted on Sunday, referencing the fictional Nazi propaganda film (about a celebrated sniper) that is a key plot point within the 2009 Quentin Tarantino epic.

As for Moore’s Twitter comments, they weren’t directly pointing at the film, but they certainly hit a nerve. “My uncle killed by sniper in WW2,” he wrote. “We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes.”

Predictably, those comments awoke the ire of many Americans—most notably those of the flag-waving, right-wing-leaning variety. And also predictably, among the thousands reacting against what Moore and Rogan had to say were a number country music artists. Country musicians, after all, have a strong, decades-long relationship with veterans, members of the military and their families.

“Sickens me to see celebrities or anybody slam the very people who protect their right to talk s—,” tweeted Blake Shelton.
