Psychologists say that spending your cash on designer clothes or the latest gadgets might give you instant gratification, but it’s experiences that will make you happier in the long-run. Family vacation or big screen TV…..what will YOU choose?
It may seem logical that a physical possession, such as the latest TV, might make you happy in the long-term because it lasts longer than a brief vacation.
But researchers at Cornell University found the opposite is true, because we adapt to new, material creature comforts and take them for granted. Anticipating future experiences, as well as remembering past times, makes us happy.
The memories I have of having fun together as a family, far out-weigh the happiness I feel with the purchase of a new car or TV for sure! When you think back at the HAPPIEST times of your life, was it ‘things’ or ‘experiences’ with loved ones that truly gave you the MOST joy?
So if your grappling with a decision…new big screen TV or family vacation, think carefully!
