Cult Film ‘The Craft’ to Get Reboot with Female Director

Hollywood’s got 99 problems, but it aims to address one of them with the Sony Pictures reboot of ’90s cult film The Craft.

Leigh Janiak has signed on to direct and co-write the feature. Janiak made her name as the writer/director of the surreal horror flick Honeymoon, starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) and Harry Treadaway (ControlPenny Dreadful).

Sony tapping her to take the helm on a major studio project following that indie success (later picked up by Magnolia Pictures) is seen by some as a reaction to the explosive L.A. Weekly feature documenting how few female directors are given studio projects and pervasive sexism in Hollywood. In the wake of that, the ACLU announced it will seek a formal investigation into “the hiring practices of Hollywood’s major studios, networks and talent agencies, and possibly bring charges against them, for what the organization described as rampant and intentional gender discrimination in recruiting and hiring female directors.”

That’s all fine and good but Hollywood is producing yet another reboot, you groan? Don’t judge too soon.
