By Brian Ives

Well, there was never going to be a “happily ever after” in Murray Mansion. We knew that even before we knew there was Penny Dreadful was renewed for season three.

But we are glad that [spoiler alert!] this season’s Big Bad, Ms. Poole, is gone, killed by Wolf-Ethan (although we’re sad to see the amazing Helen McCrory’s exit). However, we are not glad, not glad at all, to see that Wolf-Ethan did seemingly kill Sembene last episode, and if that’s it for the phenomenal Danny Sapani, then we’re really sad.

On the plus side, no more dolls, and no more talking dolls. It definitely provided a creepy moment in last week’s episode. During last night’s finale, Miss Ives’s battle with the Miss Ives doll could have gone a bit pear-shaped. It worked while it lasted, but we’re glad Penny Dreadful is moving on. And by the way, the fact that Eva Green pull that scene off is further proof that she is one of best actors working today.

Everything else that happened in the finale was a setup for next year. Here’s where our main characters are:

Sir Malcolm: Still beardless, hopefully growing it back,  and going back to Africa, again. This time, he’s going tp bring Sembene’s body for burial. But let’s see what happens when the full moon shines on that casket. I may be in denial, but I don’t believe Sembene dead.

Ethan Chandler, or Ethan Lawrence Talbot: He’s a guy who makes bad choices: He took part in a massacre of a Native American tribe, he agreed to raid Poole’s castle on the night of a full moon, and now he decided to hand himself over to Inspector Rusk, presuming that that meant that Rusk would execute him. Rusk is now taking him to America, in a cage, and it looks like he forced a crew cut on him as well.
