The hit-making band A Thousand Horses took their name from a song they wrote early in their career. Group members Michael Hobby, Bill Satcher and Zach Brown say the name was the least objectionable of the bunch at the time. “The name of the band A Thousand Horses came from . . . it was one of the first songs we wrote together was called ‘A Thousand Horses,’ and we were sitting there just like any other band having a couple drinks and bouncing band names back and forth with each other and threw out A Thousand Horses and everybody seemed to like it . . . or didn’t hate it. (Bill) ‘Well, I don’t hate it.’(laughs) (Michael) Which naming a band by the way is . . . (Bill) It’s so hard. (Michael) It is hard. (Bill) And it’s very hard to take seriously. (Zach) Well, cause they’re all ridiculous. Every band name is ridiculous. I think we thought we could make this name cool (laughter).”

Well, so far so good! The guys have already charted a Number One with their debut single, “Smoke,” and are now climbing the charts with “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial.” A Thousand Horses continue on tour with headliner Darius Rucker, and while the two artists have different sounds, the band’s guitarist Zach Brown thinks that’s what makes them perfect touring partners.

Zach says when it comes right down to it people “want to have a good time and see some good music,” and if they all sounded the same, the show would be boring. Graham Deloach added, “Yeah, I don’t want to see the same show twice.” Besides, says lead singer Michael Hobby, Darius’ audience “seems to like us and they’re just music lovers.”
