Not your usual ‘vacation story,’ but this REALLY happened!

Cuban refugees jumped out of this rickety boat and RAN onto our campsite!

Cuban refugees jumped out of this rickety boat and RAN onto our campsite! The 2 guys on-board the boat here are the Americans who ‘claimed’ the ‘abandoned fishing boat.’

Imagine our surprise when we hear all kinds of commotion outside of our RV on our peaceful oceanfront campsite. To our MAJOR surprise, this boat with 3 people from Cuba came right up to the shore and JUMPED out of the boat that was still running, and RAN onto the shore….leaving their rickety boat behind. There was a man, woman and teenage girl who appeared to be family members who risked death to come to America.

This trio were yelling “WOOHOO” as they ran onto the shore of our campsite and and obviously knew about our ‘Wet Feet/Dry Feet’ law which states that if Cubans come illegally to America and are still in the water, they are shipped back to Cuba. But if they make it to land before getting caught, they can stay here and get assistance to become American citizens.

IMG_3660A couple of guys who were camping nearby ran to the still running boat to ‘claim it’ as they were aware of a law that allows them to claim an ‘abandoned boat’ that is left behind by Cubans coming to the US. The border patrol arrived along with the local Marathon police who took the Cubans away. We were told that they will check their backgrounds and if they have no criminal records, they will be allowed to stay in the US and given government assistance to help them become US citizens.

It was CRAZY to actually see this….only in America, right?

Maybe our over-the-top Christmas lights looked like an American lighthouse from Cuba?
