(1959) – Rock pioneer Buddy Holly dies in a plane crash near Mason Cit-y, Iowa, along with touring partners The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Holly’s bass player, Waylon Jennings, gave up a seat on the plane.

(1964) – Singer/songwriter Matraca Berg is born in Nashville. She writes Deana Carter‘s “Strawberry Wine,” Reba McEntire‘s “The Last One To Know,” Martina McBride‘s “Wild Angels” and Kenny Chesney‘s “You And Tequila,” among others.

(1978) – The “Waylon & Willie” album is certified gold for Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

(1982) Jessica Harp is born in Kansas City, Missouri. She becomes a member of The Wreckers, a duo with Michelle Branch, after working as a vocalist in Branch’s band

(1993) – The “Pure Country” soundtrack goes double-platinum for George Strait.

(1996) – Shania Twain hits the top of the Billboard country chart with “(If You’re Not In It For Love) I’m Outta Here!

(2006) – “The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada” opens nationally. The Tommy Lee Jones picture features Dwight Yoakam and Levon Helm, plus music by Merle Haggard, Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender, Hank Williams Jr., Flaco Jimenez and Roger Miller.

(2009) – Darius Rucker nets a gold single for “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It“.

(2012)– Keith Urban appears on the Grand Ole Opry at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, giving his first live performance since November vocal surgery. The night also marks the final Opry show at the venue before its historic 61-year-old floor is replaced!

(2014) – Republic Nashville releases “This Is How We Roll,” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Luke Bryan, to radio.
