Memorial Day weekend is the kick off to summer. Folks enjoying family time, bbq’s, festivals and road trips. But let’s not forget the TRUE meaning of Memorial Day. It’s a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who died fighting for our country. These soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have made the ultimate sacrifice, and they will never be forgotten!!!
Like many of you I have friends and family who have lost a loved one fighting in war, and I know several currently in the military fighting for the freedom and security of our nation. Not only today, but everyday we need to thank our military for their service. God Bless Our Troops! We can’t thank you enough!
I wanted to share this letter of condolence written by Abraham Lincoln, dated November 21, 1864, during the Civil War.
“Dear Madam, I have been shown… that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming, but I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks the Republic that they died to save. I…leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.”
