One beach in Rio De Janeiro got into the Olympic spirit by taking it off. Praia do Abrico, or Abrico Beach, is the only nudist beach in Rio and they organized an entirely naked sporting event.
Competitors compete in events including football, beach volleyball, swimming, sprinting and race walking. Organizers explain the event is a nod to Olympic history, after all, the ancient Greeks competed in the nude.
Plus, the Praia do Abrico Olympic Games encourages people to be comfortable in their bodies. “Our games are all about encouraging people to feel good about themselves and promote a healthy and positive way of living freely and be at one with nature,” spokesperson Elisangela Santiago explains. “There’s no point in worrying what you look like when you bend over to pick up the ball, getting embarrassed when you fall over with your legs up in the air or bothering about your bits jiggling as you sprint for the finishing line.”
You still have a chance to strip down for a medal. The naked Olympic games on Abrico Beach take place every weekend between 9am to 5pm until September 18th, the same date as the Paralympics closing ceremony. No word on what they have planned for the closing ceremony.
