First Openly Gay Contestant Competes and Cole Swindell Plays Judge in Miss America Pageant!

Author: Roxanne Steele

This weekend it’s not just about football!  Gorgeous girls will take the stage with hopes of being crowned Miss America.  For the first time one contestant, Miss Missouri, is hoping to change the game entirely by being the first openly gay contestant to compete.

Erin O’Flaherty, 23, is being held as a trailblazer for coming forward and being who she is.  O’Flaherty started entering pageants as a college student at University of Central Florida before she publicly spoke about being a lesbian. It was a way to help pay for college.

“I want to get the conversation away from my sexuality, and I hope that by the end of the year that will be the conversation we are having,” she said. “I think other people tend to focus on it, but it is one small part of who I am and the work that I do. It is just as important for people to realize I am not one dimensional.”

Good for her! In life we can all only be who we are.  I’m looking forward to see Cole Swindlell play judge this Sunday night!  Will you be watching?
