A powerful hurricane in the Caribbean is bearing down on Haiti and Jamaica – and may be headed toward Florida later this week. Hurricane Matthew is packing winds of 145 miles per hour and is the strongest storm to threaten the Caribbean in nearly a decade.

Haiti, Jamaica and eastern Cuba are expected to get hit today, with landslides, high waves and flooding possible. Officials in Haiti and Jamaica are urging people to evacuate from vulnerable areas – as Haiti is at serious risk. Aside from serious flooding and mudslides, cholera is also a deep concern. Since the massive earthquake of 2010, the waterborne disease has killed over 9,000 in six years.

“We have no choice but to mobilize throughout the country,” said Haiti’s Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph. “I also believe that it’s an occasion for us to show our resilience, to show the capacity that we have in the face of adversity.”
