The holiday season has arrived at Starbucks, sort of. The coffee giant has kicked off their annual “red cup season” but they’ve put a twist on it. Unlike last year, where they caused a stir with a simple red cup that had people decrying a war on Christmas, the first cup of the season is actually green this year, and it acutally isn’t really their holiday cup.

The cup was designed by artist Shogo Ota, and, according to the company, features a “mosaic of more than a hundred people drawn in one continuous stroke.” “The green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers,” Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz shares. “During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other.”

Starbucks is planning to keep their red cup tradition, and has already delivered boxes of holiday designed red cups to stores with labels that say “don’t peek until November 10th,” although apparently at least one employee didn’t listen and posted this year’s cup design on imugur. The 2016 red cup features branches of holly nesteled around the Starbucks logo.

Meanwhile, although Starbucks has clearly stated that the new green cups are a symbol of “unity” not the holidays, folks on the Internet are up in arms over it. Some feel that like last year’s plain red cup, the green cup is devoid of holiday symbols, while others think Starbucks is trying to push some sort of agenda.  Of course, many have taken to Twitter to voice their opinion about the fake controversy.
